Silent Shout
(2023 - ongoing) : text, sound, performanceSilent Shout is an essay in sound poem format, about Silence. It emerged from my writing about the discursive construction of the sonic as a category, and the ways that the sonic forms of Noise and Silence are often utilised to accomplish this. This work examines why current theories of sound and silence cannot account for, or capture the nature of the act of Silencing, even as the Humanities takes a “sonic turn”. It discusses Silence as a function of power, and Silence as a path of resistance. It asks the question “Who has access to silence?”, and pulls apart the role of sound in the creation of individual subjectivity.
Silent Shout was written in PAF, France, where it was first performed in November 2023. It was later performed in Astrid Noack’s atelier as part of the event “Performance Art on Geopolitics and Climate Justice”. It was then recorded in Ambisionics, an immersive sound format, and included in the Spring Exhibition at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in February 2024.
